Meet Our Staff:


Michael L. Nickerson, CPA MSFP

Owner 

In 1983 Mike joined the accounting practice begun by his father, Ray, in 1954, and he has been enjoying the rewards and challenges of the profession ever since.  Mike received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration – Accounting from the University of Southern Maine and his Masters of Science Degree in Financial Planning from Bentley University.

In addition to providing accounting & tax preparation services to individuals and businesses, Mike focuses his practice on financial, retirement, and estate planning, as well as work with estates, trusts, and exempt organizations.

Very committed to his clients and his community, Mike serves on the Boards of Directors for several local organizations and regularly volunteers his time to others.  He has a governor’s appointment to the Maine Board of Accountancy where he currently serves as Complaint Officer.  Mike is a past president of the Maine Society of Certified Public Accountants and is a current state representative to the New England Graduate Accounting Study Conference.  He is also a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the National Association of State Boards of Accountancy.

A vintage rock musician, Mike now finds musical enjoyment playing upright and electric bass in a variety of bands spanning folk to jazz music genres. He and his wife have three grown children, and they enjoy their free time gardening, hiking, kayaking, and motorcycling.



Krista Ottman, CPA

Senior Accountant 

Krista has been with the firm since 1999.  She began her career in 1988 and has held positions in both the public and private sector.  Krista graduated summa cum laude from the University of Maine, Orono earning a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with a concentration in Accounting.  She has been a licensed CPA since 1992 and is a member of the Maine Society of Certified Public Accountants. She has previously served as Treasurer of the Waldo County YMCA Board of Directors.  In her spare time, Krista enjoys reading, playing board games, and spending time with family and friends.  



Derek Varney

Senior Accountant

Derek was born and raised in Belfast, ME.  He attended the University of Maine at Orono and graduated in 1995 with a B.S. degree in business administration with a concentration in accounting.  Out of college he began his career with Hannaford Bros. at their Scarborough, ME headquarters as a merchandising audit specialist which was part of the company's internal auditing division.  Derek was also trained as a retail department manager during his time with Hannaford Bros and has an in depth knowledge of retail operations.  Derek has worked in public accounting for over 23 years.  18 of those years at Nickerson P.A.  Derek has worked in all aspects of public practice including audit, review & other attestation services, taxation, small business consulting including entity selection and  payroll & bookkeeping services.  His clients include corporations (both subchapters C & S), nonprofits, partnerships and individuals.



Diane Hubbard

Staff Accountant 

Diane has worked at Nickerson Professional Association since 2013. She has a Bachelor’s Degree from Husson University in Accounting and a Master’s Degree from Husson University in Business Administration. Diane’s client base includes personal returns, corporations, partnerships and non-profits.  She enjoys reading, scrapbooking and gardening. 



Traci Fiori

Bookkeeping & Payroll 

Traci joined our team in 2008, bringing strong customer service skills from her call center management background.  She earned her paralegal degree in 1995.  Traci provides day to day or complex bookkeeping services, payroll processing, and payroll tax filings for a wide array of industries.  She is well versed in QuickBooks training and troubleshooting.  She also offers notary public services.   In her spare time she enjoys gardening, cooking, and reading.



Meg Nickerson

Payroll & Benefits Administrator

During her 26 year career in healthcare, Meg Nickerson has worked part-time at NPA.  She is the benefits administrator and payroll clerk for NPA. She also provides clerical support during the very busy tax season. Meg has a bachelor’s degree in secondary education from USM and is trained as both a medical assistant and a bookkeeper.

 Meg enjoys directing and acting locally, gardening, riding her motorcycle and raising chickens. She and husband Mike love being grandparents to Halle, Natalie and Bennett.


Diane Tenoff

Office Administrator

Diane joined our team in 2019 as our Office Administrator.  With 37 years of combined healthcare, business, and extensive customer service skills, Diane really enjoys working with the public.  In 2016 Diane moved from the Great Lakes State of Michigan to Belfast.  Diane and husband, Alan, are proud parents of 3 grown children and 4 grandchildren.  She enjoys reading, walking, hiking, gardening, traveling, and spending time with family.


 Jillaroo

 Office Greeter

Since 2012, Jilly has happily been the "official" greeter at Nickerson Professional Association.  She tries to make all visitors feel welcome and is quick with a sniff and a kiss.  Her duties also include checking in on staff and making sure they take breaks to pat her or to let her outside, and she's grateful that they help protect her during scary thunderstorms.

Jilly especially wants to thank all who arrive with treats to share.
