Congratulations! Your family is thrilled about the wedding, and Uncle Sam will want to know about it too. There’s some tax-related paperwork you’ll want to get through, even before the thank-you notes.
Report your name change – did you change it? – to the Social Security Administration. You keep the same number, but you’ll want a new card with your new name on it. That way, it will match the name and number on your tax return.
Did you move? Report the new address to the post office and also on Form 8822, the official change-of-address form of the IRS.
Do notify your employer that you have married. You may want to adjust your wage withholding, if marriage affects your tax liability, and maybe your health insurance. Compare the programs offered. Would it be advantageous for both of you to be covered on one health insurance plan?
