DON’T MAKE THESE DUMB MISTAKES

Before you send in your tax return, make sure that it, and everything with it, is correct. Common errors can be red flags.

• Is it the right name? If marriage or divorce has caused a name change, notify the Social Security Administration promptly. Meanwhile, put both names on the tax return.
• Don’t omit Social Security or Tax ID numbers of dependents or exes if claiming deductions for dependents or alimony.
• Incorrect 1099? Get a corrected one. Or report the income, then subtract a correcting amount, and add an explanatory note.
• Retirement income? Don’t forget to file 1099-R with it.
• Deducting charitable donations? Be sure to document everything.
• Does your check list the payer’s (and spouse’s) name and Social Security number, plus the tax form and tax period it’s for?
• Did you really file? Get a dated certified mail receipt.
• How many envelopes? Never put multiple filings in one envelope.
